Home Entertainment Comparison

Netflix

Costs (each month): Starts at $7.99

Option: Wide collection of movies and TV shows

Netflix is a very affordable option and it cost less than $8 per month. Netflix also holds a wide variety of movies, however, most of them are older ones. Those that make use of Netflix can expect some TV shows as well, along with a few series that you might have never heard of before. Recently, Netflix has been improving their collection in new TV shows and also new movies. Furthermore, they also produced a couple of their own series.

Untitled-1-Recovered

Amazon Instant Video

Costs (each month): A $99/annually Prime Membership fee is required

Options: Old and new Movies and TV shows

The disadvantage of  Amazon Instant Video is the fact that it involves a yearly Prime Membership fee of $99. In addition to that, all movies are not free to watch and certain movies require a fee of $2.99. The advantages of Amazon Instant Video are that when you subscribe to the Prime Membership, you get 2 days, free shipping on practically every purchase from Amazon. Something to look forward to would be their wide selection of movies and TV shows, with new titles being added on a daily basis. Just like Netflix, Amazon has also released a few of their own series and is only available through Amazon Instant Video.

Hulu

Cost (each month): $7.99

Options: Fantastic collection of latest movies and shows

Hulu offers a wide selection of the latest movies as well as TV shows and they update their library on a daily basis. The only disadvantage of Hulu is the fact that you have to watch the movies as soon as possible. The reason for this is the fact that they remove older episodes to make room for the new ones. Hulu also includes something for every member of the family, even the little ones. And if you enjoy reality shows than Hulu is a great option for you.

Roku

Cost (each month): $49 to $99 (once-off)

Options: Forever is increasing with variety

Roku is not a site or service like the above mentioned sites for smart TV. Roku is actually a device that you purchase. You have the option to choose from, Roku TV, a streaming stick or Roku box. The good news is after you have purchased the device you won’t have to pay any monthly fees to have access to all favorite channels. The disadvantage about Roku is the fact that some channels do require subscriptions, however they are not expensive. Because Roku only requires a once-off fee and continually increase their variety, they are becoming increasingly popular.

20th-century-fox-home-entertainment

Sling TV

Cost (each month): $20

Options: Standard package has an excellent collection and add-ons are obtainable

Sling TV can be enjoyed on your TV, smartphone or tablet whenever you want. For the reason that Sling TV is quite affordable, it is now increasing in popularity. And what is great about Sling Tv is that it does not require any installation or setup fee. The standard $20/month package offers you several channels that can be enjoyed by all members of the family, including TNT, Disney Channel and ESPN and much more. In addition, they offer add- on packages such as Travel and Kids, which allows you to choose only the channels that you are interested in.

PlayStation Vue

Costs (each month): $50

Options: Good range

PlayStation Vue is usually compared to Sling TV since neither involve contracts and each make use of the internet to stream shows, however, with a  $30 increase in the price. In addition, you won’t have to worry about additional USB sticks or boxes, since all of this is done through the PlayStation. That additional $30 per month also provides you with a couple of other features. Obviously, PlayStation Vue was only introduced to residents in Chicago, NYC and  Philadelphia and thus you will have to own a PS3 or PS 4 to use it. In case you are one of the people that fits this criteria, it’s possible to test PlayStation Vue for free, making use of their trial.

Satellite TV and Traditional cable are dying, and the industry is aware of it. With just about every household now having access to the internet, it is only practical that competitors are attempting to move their concentration onto digital streaming, however satellite TV and cable TV still has plenty of advantages and still hold a huge percentage of the industry. Why? With traditional TV, you will always have something to watch and you can look forward to a new TV show or the news. Upon choosing the ideal package to suit your specific needs, you will get value for your money, since nothing compared to the hundreds (and even thousands) of live channels that will always be playing movies and TV shows.

Cable TV

Costs (each month): Varies (usually higher in price than satellite)

Options: Large

Stuggling to choose between satellite TV and cable? Both are excellent choices in terms of movies and TV shows, however, for those bad weather conditions, cable will be able to endure it and in addition they offer a trusted service. Furthermore, Cable TV is restricted in its service area, since there has to be a Cable TV firm in your area that will be able to connect the cable to your home in order to get service. Unfortunately, this means that rural areas are unable to make use of cable TV. However, cable TV is far better for apartment renters and those who don’t want the responsibility of long-term contracts.

Satellite TV

Costs (each month): Varies

Options: Large

Satellite TV is usually less expensive than cable, but tends to be cut off by bad climatic conditions. Satellite TV can even be installed almost anywhere it is possible to set up a dish and you will get service. Satellite TV usually leads to a long-term contract, however, which is often challenging to get out of in case you move or are no longer interested in the service.

Conclusion

All these are excellent choices to consider, you actually only have to take into consideration your situation and budget. If you’re among those people who search through their existing live TV collection and believes “there’s nothing on,” choosing an on-demand service such as Hulu, Amazon or Netflix is an excellent choice. If monthly fees aren’t an option for you, Roku is an excellent choice and features a multitude of channels to select from, despite the fact that some require a fee. If you like the idea of live TV and the fact that you can choose the channels you like, and then Sling TV is an excellent option. If you are a citizen of any of the areas where PlayStation Vue can be obtained, make sure you give the trial a try and see how you feel. Lastly, if you love the fact that there is always something to watch on TV, a new movie or TV show, opt for the traditional alternatives of cable or satellite.

Louie C.K.

Rated one of the top shows of the year by Metacritic, Louie (created by starring actor and comedian Louis C.K.) follows the life of Louie C.K. and his life after he divorces his wife. The comedic show set in New York also stars Hadley Delany and Ursula Parker playing Louie’s kids.

luoie

From its beginning in 2010, Louie has grown into a well-loved comedy series that often times seem all too realistic. Every episode takes viewers on another adventure with Louie as he (hilariously) deals with his love life, everyday struggles, and his pursuit of humor. The tagline “misery loves comedy” perfectly sums up the show’s plot.

In its short life so far, Louie has won eighteen awards and received 59 nominations, in addition to winning two Golden Globe Awards. Fans of the show love it, and so do critics. IMDb users gave it 8.7/10, and it got an even better score on TV.com. Metacritic put it on their list of the best-ranked shows of all time. Even with season five still on air, fans are gearing up to hear the release date of season six.

Critics seem to love the show, too, with the Huffington Post saying the season five renewal entailed a “brilliant return” and also called it TV’s best comedy. The Washington Post had similar things to say, and they did it with a metaphor: “What tennis balls are to dogs, Louie is to TV critics: We’re obsessed.” No matter how much the critics rave though, there is really only one opinion that actually matters in television, and that’s the viewer’s.

In a rare occurrence, users on Rotten Tomatoes gave it an incredibly fresh 100% rating. While there’s no doubt the show isn’t for everyone, few rivals of the series have come out to say it.

The often absurd show has many characters (a term not used likely in Louie’s case) that sometimes include prostitutes, angry lesbians, and insane police officers. The mix of unfortunate events, ironic situations, and a lovable lead character make for a show that fans truly enjoy.

The Atlantic said it was one of the smartest and funniest comedies on the air, and fans happily agreed. The show has won the Peabody Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and countless others.louie

Louis C.K. (writer and star) has had long-time success with his stand-up comedy acts and his pursuits of writing, directing, producing, editing, and acting. Born in 1967, Louis has written for various shows, notably Late Night with Conan O’Brien along with many of his own productions. Louis debuted in the world of acting with the short film Ice Cream in 1993 and has since taken his career to new heights with a heavy focus on comedy.

It can be seen in Louis’ various works that he has always pulled from his personal life, much like many comedians. While often portraying a character of impatience and animosity on stage, Louis has said in various interviews that his two daughters always inspired him and helped him learn better patience and become a better personality (both on-stage and off). When Louis divorced his wife Alix Bailey in 2008, he soon began to joke about the various troubles of being a single dad, and it wasn’t long before he turned those struggles into the comedic half-hour episodes that we now get to watch weekly.

With over sixty episodes and counting and an ever-growing fan base, Louie isn’t likely to be cut off anytime soon. The candidness of the plots and reality that the show displays simply makes it hilarious, believable, and most certainly relatable. While Louie may take on a dark and dismal approach at times though, Louis has often said he is a generally happy guy and always tries to find happiness, or at least humor, in every miserable situation he finds himself in.

Louis went on to explain in an older interview that he originally disliked New York City (where Louie is set), but has now grown to love all of the dark, scary, and disturbing parts of the city.

louis-ck

Even with Louie only being in its fifth season, it already has twenty awards and nearly seventy nominations, which is a good sign that it will be returning for a sixth season soon. Season five, which is going to air its finale this summer, still has a strong (if not stronger) following, just like the previous seasons.

It’s obvious fans and critics love the nature of the show and Louie himself, even when episodes tend to him in uncomfortable – and often absurd – situations. Just hop over to this cable television service provider and sign up now so that you never miss Louie CK.

Things you didn’t know about Constantine

constantine2Constantine is an American television series whose characters are based on characters appearing in the comic series Hellblazer published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint. The series was produced by Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer for NBC and originally debuted in late October of 2014. The first season consisted of 13 episodes, and concluded on February 13, 2015.

The story follows John Constantine, a reluctant supernatural detective with the ability to send demons and their ilk back to their own realm. Formerly a con man, he’s turned his life around, though his only motivation is the hope of redeeming his damned soul. He must battle the accursed demons who wish to unearth the balance within the human world. Using his supernatural abilities and his scrying map, Constantine travels across the country to battle demons and return them to their own world, protecting the lives of the innocent and maintaining the precarious balance that the Rising Darkness hopes to destroy.

Unlike the 2005 live-action version of Constantine—which merely used the comic book series of as a stepping stone—the television series remains truer in nature to the comic books. The most noticeable exception to this, of course, is the adamant refusal to permit his chain smoking to be a relevant part of the television series. Due to television regulations, his chain smoking habits are completely absent from the television version. Similarly, Constantine’s bisexuality will not be shown, which has drawn severe criticism from the LGBTQ community.constantine-movie

Rotten Tomatoes has given the show a 72% critic approval rating with an average rating of 6.2 out of 10 based on 46 reviews. The overall consensus was that “Constantine ’s creepy atmosphere, high-stakes action, and splendid special effects combine with a welcome touch of humor to overcome narrative flaws and present a version of the title character that’s close to his comics counterpart.” Metacritic gave the show a weighted rating of 53 out of 100, based on 25 reviews, indicating mixed to average reviews.

Despite its rather high ratings and viewership, NBC has not scheduled a second season. They’ve not outright cancelled the show, either, waiting until May of this year to hear petitions and show ideas before making its final decision concerning the Constantine. In support of scheduling a second season, a clay stop-animation series was released by DC Entertainment. The web series is called John Con Noir. The premise of the miniseries is that John Constantine must find his show’s producers. Failing to do so will result in NBC cancelling the show. The web series was released on DC Entertainment’s YouTube account, as well as the DC Comics official website.

After the season finale, Constantine star Matt Ryan commented that he was “very, very, very hopeful” in regards to a second season. He continued, saying, “Obviously he’s such an amazing character and I feel like we’ve got so far to go with it. I think there’s so much potential with the series, with the source material, with the character and it’s something that I would really love to continue exploring. Yeah, I’m very, very hopeful. Obviously it’s out of my hands. It’s in the hands of the Gods, as they say, but I’m very hopeful, very, very hopeful.” Just go here to find more TV & Internet entertainment choices.

NBC will make its decision regarding Constantine this summer.

The Problem with The Walking Dead’s Maggie

TWDS3-Maggie

Maggie is one of the more popular characters in the Walking Dead, and she has certainly come a long way from the unassuming farm girl in season 2. However, recently the writing for Maggie has caused her to become a lackluster, and even slightly frustrating, character.

She’s just an add-on for Glenn at this point
Maggie, as a character, has not had many character traits outside of loving Glenn and wanting to be with Glenn since about the middle of the show’s fourth season. The death of Hershel has only compounded on this trait, making Maggie’s sole goal to be reunited with her husband—and nothing else. She doesn’t care if she has to travel on her own and risk her life, she is going to get back with Glenn. It’s not a bad thing for a character to have a relationship that drives them—but when their sole character trait consists of getting to that person, and staying with that person, it becomes very boring.

Maggie is now just an add-on for Glenn with very little traits of her own. The writers need to give Maggie more to do and care about outside of Glenn.

maggie-walking-dead

She doesn’t seem to care about her sister being missing
This particular problem is caused by the fact that the writers have made Glenn Maggie’s sole goal in the show. She briefly mentions her sister to Daryl after the group is reunited after Terminus, but she does not seem upset, worried or even a little bit sad about the fact that her younger sister Beth is missing—not just missing, but kidnapped by unsavory characters. This is very unlike Maggie, who has always been about family prior to the middle of the show’s fourth season, and it does not make any sense that she would essentially abandon Beth.

Her roots are being forgotten
It’s normal for characters to evolve from where they used to be, especially in a show like the Walking Dead which constantly deals with death, separations and other huge losses that can drastically change a person. However, the current Maggie has completely lost the roots of what made her character so originally compelling. She doesn’t have to be the rough-and-tough farm girl anymore, but there should be a shadow of the old Maggie—who loved her family, who loved to help others—somewhere in there.

Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Bingo

chuckie-bingo

Dog films have always been popular, but the 90s was a particularly good decade for films starring or featuring dog characters. In 19991, the film Bingo was released; Bingo is about a dog (named, of course, Bingo) who runs away from the circus and befriends a young boy by saving his life. Bingo and the boy strike an unlikely friendship, since the boy’s parents dislike dogs, and soon Bingo and his newfound friend find themselves in the midst of a dangerous criminal ring that must be exposed.bingo-friends

The film combines comedy, adventure, and even a little drama to create an interesting—if a bit ridiculous—final project. Although Bingo wasn’t the most successful of the dog movies of the 90s, or any decade, it did enter into pop culture due to its over the topic dog antics. Whether you grew up with the film or are just interested in some 90s dog movie nostalgia, consider the following things that you probably didn’t know about Bingo.

A popular line of plush Bingo toys was released alongside the film
Commonwealth Toy & Novelty, a toy company active in the 1990s, created a line of plush Bingo toys to be released in conjunction with the film. The plush toys were quite popular and came with a number of different accessories, including one plush with a blue backpack, which can be seen in promotional material for the film but is never actually seen on Bingo in the movie.

Voice actor Frank Welker provided Bingo’s vocal effects
Frank Welker, who is well known for his voice acting work a, provided some of the special vocal effects for Bingo in the film. Welker’s other work in “dog cinema” include voicing Scooby-Doo as of 2002; voicing Droopy in Tom and Jerry; and voicing Santa’s Little Helper in The Simpsons. It is also rumored that Welker voiced Zero in The Nightmare before Christmas.

bingo-riding

Bingo was played by a female dog
Although the character of Bingo is male, he was actually played by a female dog named Lacey. Lacey was adopted from a shelter by the Hollywood Animals agency and trained for use in film. It is actually common for female dogs to play male dog characters in film, usually because they are easier to train and because some male dog breeds experience shedding during certain months, which can create consistency issues.

Creator of the Walking Dead Series Sues AMC

AMC’s The Walking Dead has seen its fair share of controversy: everything from advocates for less violence on television to comic book fans upset at the many divergences the show’s writers and producers have taken from the source material has ensured that there is always something to talk about when it comes to The Walking Dead.

walkingdeadcreatorThe latest controversy to hit the extremely popular cable show is much more serious, however. Frank Darabont, who was the original creator of The Walking Dead television adaptation and wrote, produced and directed the first season of the show before being fired by AMC, is now suing AMC. His reason? Darabont’s claim is that AMC has scammed and denied him profits from the show, which has achieved immense popularity in its last four seasons.

According to the accusations filed by Darabont’s legal team, Darabont is accusing AMC (as a production company) of charging themselves, or AMC (as a cable network) an “artificially low” license fee for the rights to air the show. The contract Darabont signed with AMC states that he will receive 20% of the “Modified Adjusted Gross Receipts” for the show. These receipts are a combination of any money brought in by the production–minus all production costs.

Walking-dead-tie-up

Darabont’s lawsuit accuses AMC of deliberately choosing to use a low license fee for the show in order to ensure that there was a deficit in the MAG receipts. In the lawsuit, Darabont’s legal team pointed to another AMC show, Mad Men, as an example of AMC’s deceptive practices. Mad Men, which only has 25% of the audience ratings of The Walking Dead, has a license fee of $3 million per episode, while The Walking Dead fee is only $1.45 million…

walking-dead-two

In the first two seasons since Darabont’s departure, AMC charged itself about $49 million dollars to air the show–but the production costs for these two seasons were $104.5 million dollars. This means that there was t

echnically a $55 million dollar deficit in the Modified Adjusted Gross Receipts. And this deficit continues to climb with each season of the show, meaning that while AMC is reaping the benefits of the show’s popularity, Darabont—the creator of the show and the writer, producer and director of its first season—is receiving nothing.

So far, AMC has not made a public statement about the lawsuit or the accusations.

3 Things You Didn’t Know About Hannibal

hannibalNBC’s Hannibal written by Bryan Fuller (of Pushing Daisies fame) is a surprising sleeper hit. Although the show performed only modestly in the ratings, its critical praise and growing fan appeal have led it to become one an almost “cult hit” TV series. The show, which is set to release its second season in 2014, explores the backstory of Will Graham and the infamous Hannibal Lecter. The show’s strange, sometimes surreal storylines are just one of the reasons for its cult popularity.

Whether you’re a newfound Hannibal fan or a dedicated Fannibal, here are 3 things that you might not know about this delicious new TV show.

Every episode in the first season is named after a meal course.

hannibal.woman

Watchers of the show may have noticed that the episode titles were all in French–but did you know that each episode was actually named after a French word for a meal course? For example: Apéritif, the title of the first episode, are dry drinks or snacks served before a meal in order to stimulate appetite.

The show’s first episode made a deliberate wink towards “The Hulk.”

In the first episode, the character of Will Graham says: “Please don’t psychoanalyze me. You wouldn’t like me when I’m psychoanalyzed.” The quote is a clever nod to The Hulk. But the connection goes even deeper. In The Incredible Hulk film, the titular character was played by Edward Norton–who played Will Graham in the 2002 film adaptation of Red Dragon.

The show has a food stylist.hannibal-actor

It probably won’t come as a surprise, but Hannibal is a show with plenty of cooking scenes and food dishes. Most of the food in the show is prepared by Hannibal Lecter, who is—usually through suggestion rather than any distinctive violence—usually serving up something a little more extraordinary than cow or chicken. The haute couture food in the show is actually created by a “food stylist,” who has the difficult task of creating edible food that can safely last under hours of studio lights and retakes, but also looks like human flesh, organs and other bits. Fantasy Island TV Series

Fantasy IslandThere are a few shows that, based on the premise alone, seem like such a cool idea it is a wonder that they never got made way before they did.  I think Fantasy Island is one of those shows, where people get to travel to an island and have their deepest fantasy come true.  Who wouldn’t want this?  Most people would pay a fortune to go on a trip like this.

“Da plane!  Da pane!”

Everyone knows that catch phrase from the diminutive Tattoo, played by little person Herve Villechaize.  I’ve heard some wild stories about how crazy this tiny guy was in real life; he drank like a fish and was a womanizing maniac.  I can see that.  I would be too if I were two feet tall.

fantacy-island-leader

Ricardo Montalban was a very underrated actor.  I mean, he played freaking Khan on Star Trek and killed it.  He was sexy and smooth, with that rich accent that gave him a very authentically exotic vibe.  He was warm and reassuring to the guests that arrived at the island but you could tell he was the type of guy that didn’t mess around.  He had a commanding presence about him, Mr. Roarke did.  There was an air of mystery surrounding him too that I always thought was interesting.  Like, who the heck was this guy anyway?  How did he know so much about the guests and how exactly did the island’s magic work?

They never really say much about his actual origins but there was a strong supernatural element to the series throughout its 7 year and 158 episode run.  They had devils and genies and all kinds of other creatures that would come and go.  In a way it was a lot like Lost in my opinion.  The islands both have mystical properties.

fantasy-island-tatoo

Roarke’s job was to teach the guests life lessons during their stay, where granting their fantasy was not the end all be all to them being there.  It was more important to show them their mistakes, sort of like It’s A Wonderful Life envisioned as a weekly series. You can see old reruns of this television series with ATT U-verse TV at www.s9.com/att/uverse-tv-.html. Sign up and check out the old reruns soon.

Why Seinfeld is Still Funny

seinfeldEffortless.  That is the word that comes to mind when I think of the comedy in the hit 90’s sitcom Seinfeld, created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David.  It’s like all the actors so fully inhabit their characters they aren’t even trying to be funny yet are so hilariously good it seems easy.

It isn’t easy of course.  Not with situation comedy.  Shows take time to develop their shtick and nowadays most programs don’t get much of a chance to stick around if they don’t get high enough ratings right away.   Seinfeld’s first couple of seasons were just so-so.  As a huge fan, even I can admit that.  They needed time to get their amazing chemistry going and to have a feel for what they wanted to do but once they did, they created something timeless.

seinfeld-kramar-newman

With the show Friends following right on their heels and the current show How I Met Your Mother, Seinfeld created the whole, “a small group of cohorts hanging out and doing nothing” thing.  With Elaine, George, Jerry and Kramer, the gang on Seinfeld became synonymous with pithy dialogue and strange situations that somehow seem perfectly normal.

One of the earliest episodes is when the gang is shopping and when they go to find their car in the multi-level parking structure, they can’t find it.  Who hasn’t had something similar happen to them?  It has happened before, it will probably happen again.  Timeless.  It seems a stretch to take this simple idea and form it into a full episode but because of the imagination of the writers and cast, it works.

seinfled-jerry-elaine

Everyone can relate to having a crazy neighbor like Kramer.  But what’s great is that they are also strangely likeable and endearing.  And entertaining.  Cosmo Kramer is certainly that!  He’s always got some scheme, some plan that somehow goes right for him but wrong for everyone else.

Most people have a neurotic friend like George, the lovable loser that can’t seem to get a break, no matter how hard he tries.  Still lives with his parents, can’t keep a job, can never find love… George is a mess but that’s why we love him.

Elaine keeps the boys in line and adds some much needed female power to the group.  She’s brutality honest, which is what they need but what also gets her into trouble at work or with other females.  This is why she hangs out with the men; they tolerate her and she them.

Then we have Jerry, the de facto leader of the group.  Because of his unusual standards of women he can’t seem to keep a girlfriend and is often dropping them because of some tiny flaw in their body or character.

These characters and their adventures are immortal because they are timeless and we can all relate to them.
